  20. Quick User Guide:

  22. Load it.  It scans your email.  Double-click to edit a message, or select a
  23. message and click on delete to remove it.  'Nuff said.

  25. Preamble:
  26. ~~~~~~~~~
  27. One of the most frequently-asked questions of Argo technical support goes along
  28. the lines of, "is there an easy way of editing or deleting email once I've
  29. clicked on post but before I log on? after all, it's still on my hard drive...
  30. ".  Up until now, the answer has always been no.
  31.  
  32. Not any more!
  33.  
  34. Using Post Scan:
  35. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  36. Once loaded post scan will immediately scan for mail in Voyager's email box (if
  37. found), and a window will pop open to display what has been located.  For a
  38. healthy email there will be a line looking something like this:

  44. If no subject is found, then "<untitled>" will be used instead; other parts may
  45. be left blank, which is a sign of a corrupted email.  Don't worry if the "To:"
  46. bit is missing "@argonet.co.uk" from the end of the address - this has been
  47. done to make the display easier to read, and it hasn't in any way corrupted the
  48. address.

  50. You can then select an email from the list by clicking once with the left mouse
  51. button on any part of the display for that email, and de-select it either by
  52. selecting another email or by clicking on it with the right mouse button.
  53. Double-clicking with the left mouse button will load that email into your
  54. favourite text editor so that you can re-edit the message before it gets sent.

  56. If you select a message then you can do various things to it using the buttons
  57. on the bar above the list of messages.  The first button (starting at the top
  58. left of the window), which usually looks like a pencil, will try to load the
  59. email into a text editor - it's just the same as double-clicking on the email
  60. in the main window.  This should work for !Edit, !StrongED and !Zap, even if
  61. they're not loaded at the time.  However, if the file is not settyped properly
  62. to &FFF (a plain text file) it won't work - see the section on the Info Window
  63. for more detailed information.
  64.  
  65. The big blue and white "i" button opens up the info window - this gives more
  66. detailed information on the selected email, and allows you to do some more
  67. advanced operations on it.
  68.  
  69. The next icon, which looks like a burning envelope, will delete the selected
  70. email.  It will delete the main file from the OutGoing directory, and also the
  71. companion file frm the OutEnvlps directory.  If the file cannot be removed from
  72. the OutGoing directory then no error will pop up, but the email will still be
  73. listed in the main window.  This might be because it wasn't created correctly
  74. and is still "open", so reset your machine and try again.
  75.  
  76. The next icon looks like a plain envelope, and opens up both the outgoing mail
  77. directories for you to examine.  See the "Dos and Don'ts" section for more info
  78. about this.

  80. The icon that looks like a magnifying glass examining an envelope (or looks
  81. like the main !PostScan icon, if you prefer!) will re-scan the outgoing mail
  82. directory.  Handy if you've made some changes and want to update the list.
  83.  
  84. At the right hand side of the tool bar are three icons which control which part
  85. of the email list you're looking at; the main window will only display ten
  86. emails at a time, so you use the "PREV" and "NEXT" buttons to flip between
  87. pages.  The icon in the middle displays which emails are currently being
  88. displayed, and how many there are in total.
  89.  
  90. The Info Window:

  92. This shows a lot more information on the currently selected message, and allows
  93. you to do a few more things with it.
  94.  
  95. From the top, you should get a display which tells you:
  96. * the name of the file containing your email (usually something like "26000298")
  97. * which address you're sending the message from
  98. * the address(es) the message is going to
  99. * the subject you've entered for that message
  100. * the date the message was "sent" (i.e. when you clicked on the "Post" icon in
  101.   the email program)
  102. * The filetype - emails should be type &FFF, which is the serial number given
  103.   to plain text files.  If not, you can use the Settype button to make it
  104.   appear as a text file.
  105. * Whether a valid OutEnvelope file is also present to go with the main file -
  106.   if not, your messages might not be sent, or worse still sent to the wrong
  107.   place.  You can use the "Make Envelope" button to try to recreate or
  108.   overwrite an Envelope file, but this will only work if the main email
  109.   contains enough information (see Dos and Don'ts, below, for further info.)

  111. If this window shows that the file has information missing then the email is
  112. probably corrupted.  You should try editing or deleting this file before next
  113. logging on.
  114.  
  115. Underneath the information are a number of buttons:
  116. * Cancel - just closes the info window.  It's bigger than that titchy close icon
  117.   though! :)
  118. * Make Envelope - creates an OutEnvelope file (see above)
  119. * Settype - make the selected email appear as a text file, although if it's not
  120.   already then there could be trouble...
  121. * Delete - same as the other delete button, it deletes the email.  What else? :)
  122. * View - same as the pencil icon and double-clicking on the message from the main
  123.   window, this will attempt to load the email into a text editor.
  124.  
  125. Dos and Don'ts:
  126. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  127. * Don't alter the file name when you save it though or you will cause
  128.   problems - usually with your mail getting sent to the wrong places!
  129. * Don't make a habit of changing the outgoing address, as this is also stored
  130.   in another file (in the OutEnvlps directory).  You can use the "Make
  131.   Envelope" button on the info window to try to change this file, but it will
  132.   not take into account any CC:, BCC: or Reply-To: information.
  133. * Don't delete emails by going into the disc's directory and doing it yourself;
  134.   let Post Scan do it for you, as it will make a more thorough job of it (and
  135.   update the Post Scan list at the same time ;)  If emails fail to delete, they
  136.   might be left open from a previous operation.  Reset your computer and try
  137.   again.
  138. * Do click on the rescan button to update the Post Scan window once you've
  139.   finished editing your file(s).

  145.                    automatically scans for mail every two minutes,

  147. 1.02 (23 Jan 97) - More intelligent autoscan feature; constantly checks to see
  148.                    if any mail has been added to/removed from the outgoing
  149.                    mail directory, and if so only then does it do a scan.
  150.                    Switch this on/off with a tick box.  Also, "Post" icon
  151.                    added to activate mail sender when online.

  158. with directories and ArtWorks files dumped in the outgoing directory! - but of
